Æ

About

What’s in a letter? Letter Æ. At its core, the piece embodies the complex diphthong sound represented by the Icelandic letter "æ", akin to the English "I" in "I" or "eye". This sound, which transitions smoothly from one vowel to another within the same syllable, metaphorically mirrors the artist's journey through the multifaceted emotions encountered during the creative process, ranging from discomfort to excitement, and ultimately, to disappointment. Born into a multilingual environment, Gudrita's work is deeply informed by her personal experiences with language and the misunderstandings that can arise from trying to articulate complex emotions. "Æ" serves as a visual representation of these themes, inviting viewers to reflect on their own emotional landscapes and the ways in which language can both clarify and obscure our understanding of them. Moreover, Gudrita's approach to upcycling speaks to a conscious effort to imbue old, discarded materials with new life, paralleling the transformation of vague, often misunderstood feelings into a tangible form of artistic expression. Through "Æ", the artist opens up a dialogue about the challenges and joys of expressing the inexpressible, making it a compelling addition to the discourse on contemporary textile art.
